Since I’ve been sneaking out from the traditional dental way, to a more holistic approach, the majority of the people asked me about fluoride… do you recommend it? is it good for you? most of the time the question is genuine, and few times there is an implied judgment on my NO answer, what to say among peers… the conversation can really start heating up…
I also have to admit I’ve been in the costums house edge for long time – growing up in South America where there is a high sugar and carbs intake; fluoride its seen as a saviour, and this is how I saw it myself too for a long time. After all, I finally decided to write this post and step out the zombie route, that follows with blind eyes the big toothpaste brands without questioning their labels or ingredients.
Life is too short to ingest fluoride

Fluoride is considered an essential part of dental care. Almost all toothpaste contains it, and it is also used in high doses for most professional prophylaxis procedures (but not in holistic dentistry).
There are endless studies linking fluoride to chromosomal changes and bone cancer. Fluoride advocates argue that this limit cannot be exceeded through toothpaste use alone. The concept of holistic dentistry, however, is based on avoiding overburdening the body with artificial substances as far as possible.
How fluoride affects your teeh
Fluoride acts by interfering with the enzymes necessary for producing intact collagen, leading to the formation of imperfect collagen and irregular bone. This leads to weak, brittle enamel.
Theoretically, fluoride may not actually strengthen teeth, but work by preventing the development of teeth. In fact, fluoride can make tooth enamel weaker! Fluorosis (too much fluoride, particularly before the age of 8) causes teeth to be weak and brittle, resulting in cosmetic blemishes and tooth fractures.
If we eat well and get all the nutrients we need, there is no need for additional fluoride 🙂
In a healthy person a regular brushing, thorough twice a day 2min brush with natural source toothpaste+ floss and a Mediterranean diet: I guarantee you a decay-free mouth.
Saliva’s job is to store minerals in teeth: that is its natural function, and it does not require extra fluoride to get the job done.
These are some of the countries that have banned fluoridation of their public drinking water: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Netherlands, China & South Korea.
Food that naturally contains fluoride:
- Spinach
- Potatoes
- Seafood
- Black tea
- Raisins
Fluoride toothpaste alternatives
Hydroxyapatite is the most promising up-and-coming fluoride alternative. Use a hydroxyapatite toothpaste to properly remineralize teeth and prevent tooth decay.
