White fillings and men fertility in dentistry

Why the white fillings requires to ideally be bisphenol A (BPA) free?

Recently, the chemical compound Bisphenol A (BPA) has drawn attention from the reproductive science community, due to it’s global presence in day-to-day life. Its toxic action appears to mainly affect the male reproductive system, directly impacting male fertility.

What BPA is?

Is a chemical added to many products, and is found in polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. It is used to coat the inner lining of canned foods to prevent metal corrosion and is added to plastics to increase their strength.

BPA has a chemical structure very similar to that of estrogen. This enables it to bind to estrogen and other hormone receptors. As a result, since 2011, the European Union has banned BPA use in baby bottles (Dursun et al, 2016).

Moreover, low doses of this compound induce adverse effects on reproduction and regulation of the immune system, hormone-dependent cancers, and metabolism

BPA can modify the endocrine response, the effect of steroid hormones as well as spermatogenesis in men, and a reduction of serum and testicular testosterone levels (male hormone).

Composites do not contain pure BPA, but its derivatives, namely bis-GMA and bis-DMA.

The BPA-free composites in holistic dentistry refer to composites that use UDMA or TEGDMA monomers instead.

Consult with your dentist and ensure their materials are free from this toxic chemical.
